If You Don't Know Where You're Going, You'll Probably End Up Somewhere Else
Published in Paperback by Tabor Publishing (July, 1990)
Author: David P. Campbell
Average review score:

I wish I'd read this book years ago!
I've heard the title of this book quoted for years. When I saw a copy at my inlaws house, I decided to read it.

Although it doesn't take lots of time to read, the return on time invested can be incredible. This is probably the best book I've read on goal setting--and I've read a ton.

I particularly like Campbell's realistic approach. He doesn't try to get you to squeeze your life into a predetermined, micromanaged mold. Instead, he offers lots of advice on how to increase your options as you go through life.

I'll be getting this book for my favorite high school grads for sure. But if you're a little past high school, as I am, don't count yourself out. This book could help just about anyone.

Fantastic - required reading for EVERY highschool student!
This book helps you to understand the things you should consider throughout your teenage years, or even later, that will influence your adult life. It particularly focuses on choosing a career. The primary point is how to ensure you get and keep lots of options open throughout your life. Although it's really written for highschool students, college students would find it useful also. Actually, it's valuable even for adults. Very easy reading; only takes about an hour to read, but is well worth the time.

In Rosa's Mexico

In Rosa's Mexico
We came across this book at the local library and loved it because it incorporated some Spanish words within the stories! My daughter looks for it everytime we go to the library! She loves it and loves to practice filling in the Spanish word when we read the story together... she is only 3 right now! I highly recommend this book for some great short stories with an introduction to bilingualism!

This book soars!
These three simple stories are beautifully written glimpses into the day to day life of a little Mexican girl named Rosa. Magical things happen in her world and the paintings that accompany the text bring that magic to life and give it texture. Oh sure, the book teaches about responsibility and sharing, the importance of helping others and telling the truth, but it doesn't preach. It is a lovely book that my 3 year old never tires of. As a bonus, there are about 20 simple spanish words to enhance the experience. A first-rate keeper and a first-rate gift!

Insight Guides Bali

Authors: Garrett Kam, Debe Campbell, and Insight Guides

Great travel guide
I read the history background like a novel. The cultural information such as the drama, the dances, the religion, the art etc. is great. The photos are great too. I am back from Bali and I just take this book with me.

Insight Guide Bali
Insight Guide Bali is an exceptional travel guide. The history is well written and rich with interesting facts. I reads like a good novel. The maps are deteiled with plenty of cross references. There are plenty of travel tips from riding a bus to how to order food without MSGS. It appears that every possible travel issue has been addressed; from how not to get arrested to finding the swank resorts. The book is worth the price just for the exquisite pictures. I have never seen a travel book with photos as exceptional as these. Usually I purchase a couple of guide books before going to a new location, but this time I will only use the Insight Guide Bali.

Intimate Relationships
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (21 June, 2001)
Authors: Sharon Brehm, Rowland S. Miller, Daniel Perlman, and Susan M. Campbell
Average review score:

Tired of all those confusing opinions about your love life?
Sharon S. Brehm is a respected social psychologist who has composed a witty, fun, and insightful tome regarding the many fascinating contributions her field has made to the study of love relationships. Popular press books may or may not offer valid advice--they aren't relying on scientific research, but rather on opinions (which often conflict with the opinions found in still other books). Brehm offers her readers information that is reliable and valid, and perhaps most importantly, useful. Better still, her book is equally applicable for men and women. As a psychology professor and a consultant for individuals seeking their life mate, I read and use many books--texts and popular press--on this issue. Brehm's book is among my most trusted resources, and it gives readers the best of all worlds: excellent and engaging writing that is easily understood, information that is eminently useful, and solid research evidence rather than opinion alone. Should you live together? Does marriage really make people happier than if they had remained single? What attracts romantic partners? If you want "just the facts," this is the place to go for them. (If you want opinion-type popular-press books that support "the facts" and thus really do give good advice, I highly recommend "If I'm So Wonderful, Why Am I Still Single?" by Susan Page, as well as "How to Find the Love of Your Life," by Ben Dominitz, "The Rules," by Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider [note: "The Rules" are for women only], and "Mars and Venus on a Date," by John Gray.)

Understand your own intimate relationships better!
Confused about your conflicts with your significant other? Do you want to find out why people are attracted to some people but not others? Reading this book for my sociology class in college allowed me to better comprehend my own relationships. The book collects together social psychological research on intimate relationships, discussing such topics as attraction, sexuality, power, conflict, loneliness, and relationship development. Unlike other non-scholarly books written about relationships, this text is based on studies published by psychologists. Their conclusions can help you better understand your own relationships, but of course each individual person may differ from what sociologists generally conclude about human beings. Even though this book was written for psychology courses, the text is not too difficult to understand. This book is extremely interesting, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has been, wants to be, or is currently in a relationship - which is, basically, everyone

Kids On Strike!
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (August, 2003)
Author: Susan Campbell Bartoletti
Average review score:

One child's response
My seven-year-old daughter is reading this book now. This morning, she said to me, "Daddy, I'm so glad you got me this book from the library. But there's one thing I don't like: those companies were so mean! And why? Because of money, that's why! But those people aren't any better than other people are. It's just the way the black people used to be treated, it wasn't fair. People should be treated nicely, not just the rich people, that's what I think." So if you want to nurture a sense of social justice (and maybe a little social rebellion) in your child, this seems to be a good book. I can't wait to read it when she's done.

Labor History Lives!
Kids on Strike is an excellent introduction to U.S. labor history. The book is well-researched and enhanced by the addition of a chapter-by-chapter bibliography. Bartoletti uses her journalism background to weave an eloquent and powerful narrative. Even adults will learn something new. I, for instance, was completely unaware of how a teen-age girl led a widespread (and successful) rent strike in New York City in 1907. A great addition to school libraries.

Launch Day
Published in Library Binding by Millbrook Press (October, 1995)
Author: Peter Campbell

Beautiful book; great for kids who love space "stuff"!
My almost-four-year-old loves all things space: Star Trek, space shuttles, Apollo 13, etc. I've tried to impress upon him that space isn't just "in the movies," but that someday, he, too, could be an astronaut...that people, have in fact, already "boldly gon where no one has gone before." This book proved an excellent vehicle for helping him understand that. While the language is too complicated for a four-year-old, he enjoys the meticulous paintings of the space shuttle's journey, from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad, then to space and back. An added bonus: He had seen paintings of the space shuttle in the exhibit halls at Kennedy Space Center, and wanted to "take them home." With the paintings in this book...he can do just that.

The drawings are excellent and the story is interesting
I really liked this book because it gave a lot of detail about the actual launch of the space shuttle, but not in technical terms, so kids could understand it

Farming Families Love It!
Cute and witty! I checked this book out at the library to read to my boys and wound up buying it for my grandmother! For all tractor-driving grannies or people who love them, this book is a big hit! I love the recipie in back, too. (Great literature tie-in activity!)

A New Twist on an Old Story!
What would the Brothers Grimm say if they could read this? Could they have predicted a savvy bike-riding "Little Red"; or a Muffin-Loving Wolf; or a liberated, tough-talking Granny, who is also a very good cook? How could they object to such a delightful interpretation of their sometimes gruesome story? Kids love this book, and so do I!

Living Before God: Deepening Our Sense of the Divine Presence
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (December, 1999)
Author: Ben Campbell Johnson
Average review score:

Indepth
I came upon this book by chance. I have read past books by Mr Johnson and have found all of his writing to go beyond the superficial spiritual issues. Ben Johnson discusses how truely difficult change can be and why. Within the pages of "Living Before God" I found inspiration and understanding of the human heart. I could not put the book down, even for a moment, in my want to see further into how I can grow closer to God. Life can present many challenges to close your heart and mind to God, through the author I found ways to relax and allow myself to hear God again. I recommend this book to everyone traveling their own spritual journeys.

Another Winner
Written to share some of the things Johnson has learned about posturing ourselves in God's presence in a way that honors God, this book is for anyone interested in a deeper spiritual life. Using scripture, writings of the early mystics and personal anecdotes, Johnson keeps our interest.

He reminds us to be spiritual aware--not life- sleepers and advises us to create wonder. How to study the Word, and listening to God in our everyday lives are other meaningful chapters.

There is too much to explore in a review. Read the book. You'll love it.

Lord Dismiss Us
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (June, 1984)
Author: Michael Campbell
Average review score:

One of the best
This is simply one of the best novels ever written. It created quite a stir when it was first published in England because it reminded so many Englishmen of their public school love affairs. Some of Campbell's characters melt your heart; others are memorable for their wit. Indeed, considering titles with gay themes that are humorous, I believe only Vladimir Nabokov's "Pale Fire" can compare. But unlike "Pale Fire," Campbell's book is foremost a love story, with characters so compelling they will stay with you the rest of your life.

Two boys at British public school fall in love
Michael Campbell's 1970's novel deals with the love affair between two boys at a British public school. This school is a hotbed of passion between the boys, and several relationships between other boys form side plots to the main story.

Carleton is the older boy, who thought he was above all this passion. Yet, early on in the book he uses on of the younger boys to satisfy his physical needs. Then he finds himself falling in love with another boy. He desperately tries to keep the relationship on a platonic level, without any sex. This is played out in a storm of passion and sex between the majority of the boys and some of the masters at the school.

The two become a pair, and fall into a deep love without any passion between them. It is Carleton's last year, and he must move on to university at the end of term, leaving his pal behind.

Try as he may, at the climax of the story, Carleton gets his pal alone in his room. As they cuddle in innocence, his pal not knowing, sex unexpectedly occurs with Carleton climaxing against his pal's embrace. This physical passion shatters the relationship, Carleton cannot handle the forces it has unleashed. And he breaks off with his pal, who has not realized what just happened. Not a happy ending at all.

A Great Adventure Back in Time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I've always been interested in the Civil War and this gives a unique view of the war through a modern day doctor trapped there and trying to save lives with limited resorces while she searches for a way home. A fun romance and great read. I would recommend this to anyone.
